The History of Sauna

Sauna facts that some people may not know is that sauna has had a long history of being a long accepted traditional cure for almost every malady from demon possession to gout. In fact, during the days of the Roman Empire it was believed that sauna along with hot and cold baths, could cure people who were suffering from nightmares and hallucinations. While sauna’s effect on the psychological state of a person cannot be accepted as a valid cure, a sauna session does make us significantly relax.

Having a sauna also seems to help detoxify our body. For instance, having a good sweat can get rid of all the toxic chemicals that we take in because of our diet. Mercury, lead and even bacteria causing skin disorders are washed away when we sweat during a sauna session.  Even dermatologists agree that acne and other skin diseases may be minimized or completely cured when one goes through a couple of sauna sessions.

Holistic healers also point out sauna facts such as the effect of a sauna sessions on the respiratory system makes the human immunity tougher. Those who love sauna session are less prone to catching the flu, allergies and colds.

Another ancient sauna fact pointed out by Hippocrates is that sweating caused by high heat is a cure against bacteria and parasites. Today we all know that some bacteria-types do not survive in high temperatures. Perhaps that is why there are still birthing sauna’s, particularly in Finland, where it is believed that mothers giving birth are less exposed to germs. Aside from that however, these birthing saunas relaxes the mother and makes her more psychologically receptive to the whole birthing experience.

Today, some swear that they’ve lost weight because of sauna and massage. Though that may be water weight lost because of the sweat, the effect is still beneficial. Besides, a thirty minute sauna session is equivalent to about 500 calories. Losing water weight also is good because that means losing all the toxins in the body too, though one must make sure that one drinks enough water during and after a sauna when one begins to feel uncomfortable. A sauna is supposed to relax you, thus, the moment you feel ill at ease, it is wise to get out of the sauna room and drink some cool water and have a cool shower.

Though saunas usually benefit everyone, one must always use the sauna moderately. A cool shower before and after a sauna session may not be a must- but it’s a safe option to take to make you that you have a relaxing time as you sweat and give your body that cleansing treat!
